Better Than Rice

As a half asian, I am very into all asian food (shocking, I know). Which means, I'm very into rice. I love the texture of the grains, I love it drenched in sauces, I. Live. For. Rice. But as I eat pretty low carb, I rarely allow myself to eat it and when I do, I just feel guilty. And I HATE that feeling. I found cauliflower rice to be a pretty good substitute and I could handle it, but it's just not the same. Then I was on the 'gram and saw someone use Better Than Rice in their meal and I was like, HOLD THE PHONE WHAT IS THAT. Did a little googling and here's what I found:

I mean, look at the ingredients!👆🏼 There's one type of organic flour, some organic fiber, limewater and water. And that's it. No crazy chemicals, no added sugar, no crap.

Now look at the nutrition:

The net carbs are ZERO, since there are 4 grams of fiber in there (Carbs - fiber = net carbs) and for a full serving, there's FIFTEEN CALORIES for a 3/4 cup serving. By comparison, one cup of white rice has *over* 200 calories.

So ok, I obviously bought it on prime but I had to buy it in a pack of 6 bags. Which was almost 30 bucks. So, not cheap. And if it was terrible, then I just wasted 30 bucks. BUT if it was great, then I just found my answer to being able to eat rice whenever I wanted. *Narrator: The risk was worth it*

Let's talk about the prep. It comes in a bag with a bit of liquid, assuming so it doesn't dry up in storage. And the bag itself tells you that there may be a slight "aroma" (which, truth be told, is more like an odor when I first read that sentence I was like, FORGET IT) but then it says that once you rinse it in cold water, the odor goes away.

So the night I received the "rice" I made a quick stir fry with whatever veggies I had, some leftover chicken from a roast we did a couple days ago, Better Than Rice, soy sauce, chili flakes, ginger and garlic. I opened up the bag of Better Than Rice and yeah, there was a little smell. Kind of...fishy? I mean, it's not great but it's definitely not enough to make me gag. And like the instructions said, as soon as it's rinsed in cold water, it goes away.

Now onto the the texture. Because rice doesn't taste like anything to begin with, the taste was the same as regular rice. The texture was what I was most excited about. Although SLIGHTLY more gelatinous than rice, it was pretty effing close. Way closer than cauliflower rice, that's for damn sure. Cauliflower rice is now officially, for the birds.

I know this sounds dramatic but I am SO HAPPY that I found this I could cry. I almost did last night when I took the first bite of my stir fry. I now feel like I can eat rice whenever I want, without the guilt, and thoroughly enjoy my meal.

I will now be eating this with Indian curries, korean bibimbap, any and all filipino food, all chinese food...basically THE ASIAN FOOD WORLD IS MY OYSTER.

Well great, now I'm fucking starving.

(PS This brand also makes Better Than Spaghetti and Better Than Noodles. Gonna try those suckers out too.)

Have you heard of this rice and or brand?
